KNOW ANYONE WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED? - PLEASE PASS ALONG. The Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP) is now accepting applications for the 11th Annual Patty Iron Cloud National Native American Youth Initiative which will be held in Washington D.C. , June 21 - 29, 2008. American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) high school students, ages 16- 18, who have an interest in the health careers and/or biomedical research are encouraged to apply. The NNAYI scholarship pays for travel, lodging, and most meals during the program. NNAYI's curriculum is strategically designed to prepare students for admission to college and professional schools, as well as for careers in health and biomedical research.
To accompany the students, AAIP is accepting applications for counselors, age 21 and older, to serve as role models during the nine-day program. AI/AN college students and health professionals are encouraged to apply.

Patty Iron Cloud Program Information
Through its cooperative agreement with the Office of Minority Health, the Patty Iron Cloud National Native American Youth Initiative is an intense academic enrichment and reinforcement program designed to better prepare American Indian / Alaska Native (AI/AN) high school students to remain in the academic pipeline and pursue a career in the health professions and/or biomedical research. The Association of American Indian Physicians will select 60 AI/AN high students and 12 counselors to attend the Patty Iron Cloud NNAYI Program held each summer in Washington DC.
During this week long program, participating students receive:
* A broad perspective on health careers and biomedical research
* An introduction to national health and scientific institutions
* Opportunity to network with American Indian and Alaska Native health professionals and physicians as well as learn about mentoring and shadowing with AAIP members
* Information on the demography of Native American populations and diseases affecting Native American communities
* Information on current health legislation/policy and educational issues affecting the academic and professional progress of Native Americans
* Workshops on:
- Standardized examinations and coursework
- Study and test taking skills
- College application process/financial aid
- Leadership/Communication Skills
- Interactive Learning and Time Management
NNAYI Program addresses five goals:
* To increase the number of AI/AN students entering health professions and biomedical research in efforts to eliminate health disparities;
* To increase coordination with organizations involved in recruiting AI/AN students into health professions, including colleges and universities, Indian Health Service and other federal agencies;
* To increase the awareness of Indian health issues among AI/AN students;
* To increase awareness of the personal and academic skills required for admission to colleges/universities; and
* To increase student access to AI/AN role models in health careers through mentoring activities during NNAAYI.

ELIGIBILITY
American Indian/Alaska Native high school students age 16 – 18 that are planning to enter a health profession are eligible to apply. Students must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA (A = 4.0). Students are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, demonstrated interest in the fields of health sciences or biomedical research, leadership skills, and personal attributes. Scholarship pays for lodging, most meals, and travel expenses
NOTICE: The Patty Iron Cloud National Native American Youth Initiative is NOT a summer camp - it is an intensive academic enrichment program that consists of a rigorous schedule of all-day sessions as well as continuous walking and/or walking long distances. You must be prepared to work hard and use your own initiative to take advantage of this learning opportunity.

Counselor Information
Counselor Application Packet Application - Deadline: March 21, 2008
ELIGIBILITY
The Association of American Indian Physicians will select twelve counselors, age 21 and older, to attend the NNAYI program to be held in Washington D.C. Each counselor will serve as a role model and chaperone throughout the week for a select group of five to six high school students. American Indian/Alaska Native medical and health professional students preferred but not required. AAIP will cover travel, lodging, and most meals. Counselors will receive a stipend upon completion of the program. Counselors will be expected to arrive in Washington D.C. two days prior to program dates.
